Blue Ridge Parkway Adventure

Day Two

Saturday, June 29 2002
We woke up at 8:00 AM and Scott cooked pancakes while Kimberly packed up everything in the tent. We enjoyed a nice breakfast, took down our tent, walked to the river and then we were off. We visited some of the "touristy" shops in Cherokee, Kimberly had her picture taken with an Indian dummy, the same one from the trip she went on as a child. We panned for emeralds and then went on the the Oconoluftee Indian Village. We paid $12 each to enter. We went on a 1 1/2 hour guided tour. It was quite interesting. We took many digital pictures. Kimberly plans to make a slide show for her students. We ate lunch at the Pizza Inn and went to Blackrock Outdoor Center (Scott's Request). We then began our journey up the Blue Ridge Parkway at about 2:00 PM. We stopped at many overlooks and took pictures. We also stopped at Water Rock Knob. There was a sign that said .5 miles trail to the knob. We decided to try it. Kimberly almost gave up after 5 minutes. It was quite steep at first and then it became steep and rocky! It was a long and hard trip, but we made it. Scott found the view breathtaking. Kimberly didn't see the point, But I am proud that i made it! (We plan to purchase walking sticks tomorrow in Asheville, NC. We arrived at Mt. Pisgah campground at about 5:00 PM. We set up camp and then went to find Sliding Rock. We ended up going the wrong way at first due to bad directions. We found Sliding Rock and Scott convinced me to try it out. The water was freezing, but I did it. I had a complete panic attack about 1/2 way down the rock. I survived but did not go again. Scott went down two more times and then we left. Our next stop was Looking Glass Falls. By this point I was cold, wet, and hungry. Plus the battery in the camera died and we were unable to get the pictures we wanted to get. This put us both in a bad mood. We may return tomorrow. We came back to camp and had spaghetti for supper. We disposed of our garbage in the bear proof containers. We then headed for the campfire circle to catch the end of a talk on Cherokee Folklore. We enjoyed a fire and are now getting ready for bed. Scott's downloading pictures from the camera to the laptop and is about to blow our air mattress back up, the valve wasn't closed and we are now lying on the ground.
