Day Four

(8:45 am)
We slept a little late today and had our regular set-up for packing. We drove to Linnville Falls and hiked down the Erwin Trail to three different overlooks (Upper Falls, Chimney View, and Erwin's View, Only Scott went to Erwin's View). We got to try out our new walking sticks on the hike. We ate lunch in the car on the way to Grandfather Mountain ($12 each). We drove straight to the top. We went out on the "Mile High Swinging Bridge." We climbed out on some rocks on the other side then we drove down to the animal habitats. We saw bald eagles, bears, golden eagles, otters, cougars, deer and we think a beaver. Scott walked out to the bluffs to take pictures. We then headed to the Linn Cove Viaduct Visitor's Center. We walked down a short trail to get pictures of the viaduct. Our next stop was Doughton Park Campground. We got firewood and set up camp at site 87. The campground was pretty much empty. We enjoyed a fire, ate ham, mashed potatoes and green beans. We took a long walk to throw away our trash. When we got back to the campsite we made our lunch for the next day. Scott then downloaded the day's pictures and burned a back-up CD. We then packed up everything we could and I went with Scott to the men's room. Here Scott took a "shower" in a bathroom stall from a water spigot with a solo cup. It was quite cold and amusing. We are going to bed now and plan to get up at 6:00 AM to head for Roanoke, VA.
