Blue Ridge Parkway Adventure

Day Five

Tuesday, July 2, 2002
(6:00 AM)
We got up early and ate Cheerios. We had our normal jobs of packing up. We were on the road by 7:00 AM. Our first stop was Mabry's Mill off the Blue Ridge Parkway. We viewed the exhibits (took many pictures) and I purchased some real honey for Joanna. We had a long drive (120 miles) to Roanoke, VA. In Roanoke we visited the Virginia Museum of Transportation. They had model trains and informational exhibits. They also had an exhibit featuring costumes used in the movie Titanic. We bought groceries, got gas and got back on the road. We ate our sandwiches in the car. We stopped at the Roanoke River and walked down a short trail to an overlook. We looked for, but could not see the Roanoke River Dam. We traveled on to the Peaks of Otter Campground but decided not to stay there. I bought some blackberry jam for my dad. We drove on to Otter's Creek and set up camp at site 2. We heard thunder so we set up the tarp again and this time we needed it! We decided to go and see Natural Bridge tonight because it was so close. You cannot see the bridge from the road so we had to pay $9 each (which was with a $1 AAA discount) to go see it. The rock formation was very neat, but not really worth $18, but we didn't have a choice. We decided to go on to Lexington, VA for dinner. By this point it was pouring and thundering and lightning. We ate at Wendy's and headed back to camp. We bought Blue Ridge Parkway t-shirts at the gift shop here at the campsite. We had a fire even though it was still raining some. I took a "bird bath" at the comfort station and now it is 9:25 PM and we are going to bed. Scott is downloading pictures again, and we are going to Big Meadows campground in Shenandoah National Forest on Skyline Drive tomorrow and probably to see Shenandoah Caverns.
